Meet Our Writers: Modupe Oloruntoba

We chatted to writer + Best Lover Modupe Oloruntoba about herself, the things she does to keep sane + the songs she listens to while hosting a kitchen dance party

What do you do for a living?

I write about fashion & beauty, their industries, how they intersect with culture and sometimes their role in self reflection. I write material for readers, and I write marketing for consumers.

What do you want to do for a living?

This, pretty much, along with other consulting work I would like to go after. Someday I’d like to do it all on platforms I own & operate. I’d love to write in TV, film, and music, too.

Tell us something you find weird but wonderful about yourself?

My curiosity — it is my defining trait. It’s brought me so much of the good in my life. It’s also gotten me in some trouble, but that’s a story for another day.

What is one item you own that makes you instantly feel great when you wear it?

A navy pinstripe blazer I have from good old Woolies. Blazers in general make me feel great, but that one is the best.

What’s your worst lockdown habit?

My worst lockdown habit is my worst life habit, intensified by current conditions: procrastination. Might be an email I need to send, might be the doing the dishes. It comes and goes, like every feeling and state of mind right now.

Your hottest isolation tip?

All things in moderation. Food, sleep, & news in particular. Rebuilding habits & routine will be hard enough after this is all over, so moderate as well as you can, as graciously as you can.

What is the one book you find yourself recommending to people all the time?

Emma Gannon’s Multi Hyphen Method. It’s not for everyone, but it is helping me make sense of myself and of the way I feel pulled in the direction of a thousand interests.

What's the best meal you've ever had in your life? Where did you have it?

Any breakfast at my grandma’s table in Ilorin.

What is your favourite ornament/item of furniture in your home?

I have now lived alone for a year and have barely more than the essentials, but I do love my living room rug

What is your holy grail make up/skincare product?

A MAC concealer palette I was gifted by make up artist Renee De Wit. I have a lot of blemish scarring and hyperpigmentation and that palette makes all the difference.

What habit/ritual do you do each day to keep you sane?

I have the worst track record with habits & rituals, but my best days tend to start with prayer & worship. It’s what fuels endurance on low days and keeps the energy of a high day from turning chaotic.

What's something you've had to learn the hard way as a teen?

Your right to be angry about a personal slight doesn’t mean much, and can’t really yield anything fruitful.

What something you've had to learn the hard way in your 20s?

The cost of procrastination!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? And 10? And 30?

That’s all incredibly blurry right now. I used to be a 5 year plan girl, but life has railed against that at every turn. Now, I have a few things I want to do, on whatever timeline God sees fit to work things out. I don’t know if I’ll still be single or in Johannesburg in 5 years, but I’d like to have started a company supporting the growth of African fashion, written a book, and/or have my MBA in global fashion media by then. In 10 or 30? Not a clue. Contented, I hope.

Size Guide

We want you to be entirely satisfied with the way your ring fits. That means we need a little help from you before you choose your size.

Step One

Take a piece of string and wrap it around the base of your finger.

Step Two

Using a pen, mark the point on the string where the end meets.

Step Three

Using a ruler, measure this length in mm.

Step Four

Match your measurement to the table below.

Extra Tips

Don’t forget to allow for enough room to get the ring over your knuckle.

Remember that all of your fingers probably have different measurements. Make sure you measure the specific finger you are buying the ring for.

To be 100% sure, measure your finger at the end of the day. That’s when it is most likely to be at its largest.

US 7
