Winged Ambition: How I Conquered The Cat-Eye

A personal account of my battle with hooded eyes.

She was just totally in her zone. I wanted that kind of blasé confidence. Her hand wasn’t even firm for goodness sake. She chuckled warmly at my shocked remarks and cooing. Like a god laughing at the follies of men. I was sold.

It was after work at the NYX store in Sandton which I had wondered in on a whim. I’ve always loved the whole cat-eye liner look but had only successfully pulled it off about three times in my entire life. I had flirted with YouTube tutorials for hooded eyes specifically, but I’m the type of person who needs in-person instruction if I’m really going to grasp something so while I technically knew what to do, when it came to actually trying to do it on my face, I usually landed up with an almost completely black eye or a very abstract interpretation of a winged eye.

The shop assistant asked me if I needed anything in particular and I don’t really know why I said I wanted to do a cat-eye since I had long given up hope that I would be able to pull it off in this lifetime or the next. She smiled and pointed. ‘You need her’. And dear reader, by the end of my visit I agreed.

With the help of the NYX Epic Liner, my liner leader taught me that’s actually kind of easy if you’re willing to accept that your eyes are sisters NOT twins. My liner leader also taught me that I just need to chill the hell out if it’s ever gonna work. This applies to my whole life btw.

From a practical point of view, here’s what I learnt:

  1. Start super skinny (it’s easier to add than take away) but don’t be too precious about perfection.

  2. Clean up any minor smudges only once you’re happy, like writing, don’t edit as you go.

  3. Product does matter but you don’t have to break the bank. I also very much enjoy the Body Shop liner, which I got on one of their many sales.

  4. If they’re not symmetrical, it’s okay – your face isn’t symmetrical. If this seems very specific, it is, it’s a message from me to me.

Size Guide

We want you to be entirely satisfied with the way your ring fits. That means we need a little help from you before you choose your size.

Step One

Take a piece of string and wrap it around the base of your finger.

Step Two

Using a pen, mark the point on the string where the end meets.

Step Three

Using a ruler, measure this length in mm.

Step Four

Match your measurement to the table below.

Extra Tips

Don’t forget to allow for enough room to get the ring over your knuckle.

Remember that all of your fingers probably have different measurements. Make sure you measure the specific finger you are buying the ring for.

To be 100% sure, measure your finger at the end of the day. That’s when it is most likely to be at its largest.
